Couple of weeks back in the 2011 Calculus Bowl hosted by UT, Arlington, you will think that schools like North hills preparatory or Coppell having a good Asian population (known for Maths skills) will send their best high schools kids. I think for top academic excellence we cannot generalize the descent logic. The same question baffled me as well and I recollect for the 2011 NM semifinalists, the % of Asians as NMSF were half in FM compared to Plano Schools. The Asians in FM are growing although they are less than Coppell or Plano. It also gets you a nice chunk of $$$ at most other schools.except UT-they discontinued their program last year.įM schools are 5A just like Plano or Coppell. The basic ability still has to be there, the school is just good at giving kids the opportunity to use their abilities-which I think is a indicator of a "good" school.īy the way.being a National Merit Finalists guarantees you essentially a "full ride" at OU (hence my SN), University of Florida, and Arizona State. If other schools put as much effort (I hate to say emphasis, because that has a negative connotation-this program is optional and don't take away from other learning opportunities) into this, they would probably see their #s jump, maybe not to the same levels, but definitely higher.ĭue to this, I don't think # of NMSF is really an accurate gauge of how well a school is doing overall, but it isn't really worse than any other measure.

All sophomores are required to take the test and any above a certain score threshold are given the opportunity to participate in a week long "boot camp" over the summer, as well as a 9 week course in the fall.
I can speak for Flower Mound-it is relatively well distributed compared to the overall ethnic population of the school, though there are a decent number of Asian winners.
